I woke up one morning, a few years back, and thought 'hey! Cello's an awesome instrument, maybe I could make a life out of it.'
Well I play cello, but still haven't gotten a life out of it. I think I might never 'get a life' in the sense of making a living, or keeping up-to-date with fashion or whatnot. But hey, that's okay, I'm playing cello right? Really, that's the only thing that matters to me.
What is your interest in Playing It Together?
Participant, Musician, Other
What musical instrument/s do you play?
Cello
Do you currently play in a chamber group?
Yes I do indeed. Black Bows String Quartet, named so after our carbon fibre bows, but none of us play with them anymore... Also on occassion play in a Clarinet-Piano-Cello trio, with two Andrews, so the name might as well be JuliAndrews. More recently have started with the Trio Con Brio (Kinga, Annie and I) playing some very challenging but wacky music! Watch out everyone, there will be strange hats on stage!
Your favourite music or composer
Too many to mention. Look, I'll develop a taste for anything, except the 'pop/hiphop/urban' (dare I say?) crap of today. Favourite composers include:
Vivaldi, Haydn, Beethoven, Rossini, Berlioz, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, Elgar, Rachmaninov, Ravel, Bartok, Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Phillip Glass, John Williams, really, anyone who composes something the slightest bit substantial.
In more recent times, I love the 60s-early 90s music, particularly 80s.
Favourite artists, well I love Jackie du Pre, of course! Maxim Vengerov is my favourite violinist, he is simply electric on stage.
Howard Shore's 'Lord of the Rings' score makes me drool. Really it does. And yes, it's not really 'genius' as such, but it affects me very strongly, for some bizarre reason. I think Shore just painted the whole story of the trilogy very well.
So yeah, it's a fairly broad range. I could've summarized this entire section with 'anything' but where's the fun in that?
Hi Julia,
Of course - still valid! Did you decide on a music shop? I can organise it for any music shop on the coast, or a music shop online ie itunes or other.
Cheers
Rae
Hey, glad you're back!
Animato should be fine. There's no time limit - I just wanted to make sure you got the good news :-). So, just let one of us know when you've decided. Hope you can join us for an online chat soon. Have you answered the poll on the home page yet to let us know what time suits best?

That sounds great, Julia. I would love to play it. Could you please leave a comment or some kind of notification for my teacher Janet Brewer? She might be able to get back to you about that. I'm not sure how difficult it would be but I like the idea.
Thanks for the wall comment, Julia. When I first came to the site, I thought it was basically a Facebook but for musicians, haha. Then I read the 'about' page and realised what it is really about. It would be great to do something for the competition with you. :)
Haha, I see you beat me to it! I was going to put up some of those McGregor photos but haven't had time yet.
Anyway, Annie's mum was going to bring some quartet music next week to QYO so that we could go through what we might like to play in the next chamber concert if you're free?
Have you checked the date yet? It's the 30th of August.
